Our Presentation

Today, the 28th of June was the day of our presentation. We did a lot of calculations for this presentation, afraid that the teachers would ask questions like “How much energy can your solar panels produce?” We were totally prepared for those types of questions. However, the teachers did not ask these types of questions at all! They asked about other things that we did not really consider about… We were totally stumped.

After we finished reciting our script, we proceeded to show our audience the facilities we had in our virtual school. Unfortunately for us, we spent the most time building the staff room and we totally forgot to show it to them!!

Despite all the nervousness and the missing out on showing the staff room, I feel that we did really well as a team to present our model to our audience to the best of our abilities.

The process of building our model using virtual reality…

We decided to build our model using Minecraft as using virtual reality would be much more convenient as compared to building a physical one. If we had built a physical model, we would have to spend time cutting the cupboards and gluing everything together which would be pretty time consuming and there would be many different parts of the physical model which we may need to bring home which could be a hassle.

However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to everything. By using Minecraft, it was a tedious procedure as we had to lay each brick one by one. So, laying out the floor already took up quite some time. Also, whenever we forgot to charge the iPad, we could not do anything. Despite that, our final model came out pretty nicely and we were pretty pleased with it.

About the narrative, we totally forgot we had to write based on another person’s point of view. This was quite an obstacle for us as we had to think hard about who’s perspective we were going to write about. Our model looked great but it did not really cater to any specific student’s needs…

EDICT

Empathise:

Questions we asked:

  1. What is something our school doesn’t have now and is a must have in the new school campus?
  2. What are some things that you want in the new school campus but is not necessary? (A luxury)
  3. What do you think is unnecessary in the current school campus that we should not have in the new school campus?
  4. What are some areas in the current school that need to be improved on?

What Parents, Students and Teachers want in the new school campus:

  • A bigger carpark- Teachers
  • Better facilities (Bigger SAC, a Swimming Pool, etc.) – Teachers, Students and Parents
  • Cooler classrooms (Air-conditioning?)- Students
  • Nicer canteen- Students
  • Escalators- Students
  • Judo room- Students
  • More greenery- Parents
  • A bigger backyard café- Students
  • Lesser lecture theaters- Students

Define:

Things we will focus on:

  • A bigger carpark
  • Cooler classrooms
  • Judo room
  • More greenery
  • Lesser lecture theaters

Ideate:

Ideas we have thought of:

  • Build many levels for the school building due to the limited amount of space we have.
  • Building basements that act as the carpark so that teachers have more place to park their vehicles.
  • Have creepers grow all over the school building to help block out sound and to keep the school building cool instead of using air-conditioning that will consume a lot of electricity, resulting in an expensive electricity bill and add on to global warming.
  • Have more lifts instead of escalators and allowing students to take the lifts too.

NY Connect

Personal Opinions:

Cherlyn:

I feel that NY Connect allowed us to understand the art of buildings better and about keeping the heritage of buildings. It also allowed me to understand what goes into designing a building, like thinking about how the weather would affect the building and also the location the building is in.

Jia Yue:

NYconnects allows us to learn from professional people and thus can help us think of our design and how to make it sustainable.

Rui Qi:

It was enlightening to listen to the professionals talk about sustainable things and it helps me to get a deeper understanding on our design and more ideas .

Sabrina:

I feel that the speeches are very interesting and it helps me to better understand about our project.

Learning Journeys

10th May 2018

On thursday, we went to the new school building site to explore and look around. Firstly, we went to jurong park to explore as the school site was right beside the park.

The park was beautiful with much greenery and nature. We walked into the park and finally saw the school site. The site was not as big as we had expectedand was really long but thin.

After exploring the area and the park , we headed to the industrial areas around the school site to explore.

After looking around the area, we took the MRT from Boon Lay to Jurong East and had lunch at Jem.

After lunch, we explored the future 2nd CBD area, Jurong. We explored the library, CPF building and the neighbouring shops.

Learning Journeys

On the 8th of May, our group went to Hort Park and Telok Ayer for our learning journey.

Our first destination was Hort Park, which had many vegetation growing around and play equipment were also available there. Despite the heat, we managed to walk around the entire park and learnt a lot of new things!! We also managed to get into a glass house, which was literally just a small house made of glass. One of the female staff in the glass house volunteered to clear our doubts. She answered each question with patience and honesty, allowing us to be more open to her. We were awed at some of the amazing plants that grew in the park.

At our next destination, Telok Ayer we took a guided tour into Thian Hock Keng temple. Coincidentally, the temple was in the midst of celebrating Mazu’s birthday, the Goddess of The Seas.

Unfortunately, the temple was very crowded and we were not able to stay in the temple for long.

We did learn about the different Gods and what they did.

All in all, this learning journey allowed us to understand the Chinese culture and the significance of plants, making this trip an extremely meaningful one!
